Working Remotely? You Need to Be Even Smarter about Online Security

Remote workers still need to follow standard company security protocols, such as using strong passwords, updating devices, and remaining suspicious of random links and attachments.

But the basics aren’t enough! Think about it like this; where you go, your devices go. And where your devices go, your information goes.

Employees
  • First, follow any directions your employer has issued
  • Check and install updates for your computer and all software
  • Run full scans of your computer for viruses and spyware (Windows Defender or 3rd party)
  • If using a personal PC, uninstall or delete any unused apps and create a Limited User Account for everyday use. Keep the Administrator access for special tasks such as software installation
  • Make sure your wireless network is secure by using WPA2 and a strong, unique password (non-default)
  • Check your router for issues with F-secure’s router check
Daily Routine
  • Make sure you are connecting to a secure wired or wireless network
  • You should be on your home network, however, if you’re working in a public area use a VPN such as ExpressVPN, NordVPN or Surfshark
  • Lock your computer screen (Windows key + L) or for Mac (Command + Control + Q) whenever you step away from your desk
  • Keep food and beverages away from desktops and laptops
  • Verify that security software, such as antivirus and antispyware is running and updates automatically
  • Browse wisely; use common sense to avoid websites that seem questionable
  • Power down your computer at the end of the day
  • Delete e-mail in junk e-mail and deleted items folders
  • Empty the Recycle Bin, delete unused or duplicate files, e-mail attachments, and uninstall unused applications
  • Check for updates for your Windows/Mac computer and all of your software
  • Run full scans of your computer for viruses and spyware
Employers
  • Use VPN to allow remote computers to connect to your company networks as if you were in your own building. There are many to choose from, so make sure you research which one will best meet your needs. It is well worth the investment.
  • Back up data daily and store it safely
  • Create clearly defined IT policies, protocols, and cyber safety policies.
  • Request that employees use only approved devices to access and store corporate data.
  • Mandate the use of strong passwords when accessing corporate networks
  • Implement multi-factor authentication
  • Educate employees about the increased risk of cyber threats. especially now that many people are working from home.
