Realizing you lost your wallet can be a very scary moment. You don’t know if you misplaced it, or if it was stolen. Either way, having a plan can help you keep a level head, know what to do first, and help you monitor potential identity theft.
What To Do If Your Wallet is Lost or Stolen
Prepare
First, take these preemptive actions to minimize loss:
- Don’t carry more credit/bank cards than necessary.
- Photocopy the contents of your wallet. Copy both sides of your license, debit cards, credit cards, etc. This action will provide you all the account numbers and phone numbers to call in case of loss or theft. Keep photocopies in a secure, safe place.
- Periodically update your photocopies to reflect any changes in debit cards, insurance cards, etc.
- You should NOT keep your passport or Social Security Card in your wallet, but if you do, make sure to make copies and also keep them in a safe place.
If Your Wallet is Lost or Stolen
Stay calm. You have prepared by making photocopies of your wallet’s contents.
- Locate the appropriate phone numbers from your photocopies. Call and cancel your credit cards, ATM, and debit cards immediately. With your Jefferson Bank Visa® Debit Card, you can go online and use Card Management to report your card as stolen.
- File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where the loss or theft occurred. This proves to card providers you were diligent, and it’s a first step toward an investigation.
- Inform the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) that your license was lost or stolen.
- Call the three national credit reporting agencies and the Social Security Administration immediately to place a Fraud Alert on your name and social security number.
- If you have insurance cards in your wallet, notify your insurance company that your insurance IDs were stolen.
