What to Do If Your Wallet Is Lost or Stolen

First, take these preemptive actions to minimize loss:

  • Don’t carry more credit/bank cards than necessary.
  • Photocopy the contents of your wallet. Copy both sides of each license, credit card, etc. This action will provide you all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call in case of loss or theft. Keep the photocopies in a secured, safe place.
  • Place a photocopy of your passport in your carry on or checked luggage when traveling

If your wallet is lost or stolen:

  • Locate the appropriate phone numbers from your photocopies. Call and
cancel your credit cards, ATM, and debit cards immediately. They can also
inform you how to replace your cards.
  • File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where the loss or theft occurred. This proves to card providers you were diligent, and it’s a first step toward an investigation.
  • Pay close attention to activity on your accounts and report any suspicions of misuse.
  • Call the three national credit reporting agencies and the Social Security Administration immediately to place a Fraud Alert on your name and social security number.

    The numbers are:

    • Equifax: (800) 525-6285
    • Experian: (888) 397-3742
    • Trans Union: (800) 680-7289
    • Social Security Administration fraud line: (800) 269-0271
